UK Games Expo is coming up soon (31st May - 2nd June) and one of the stands I plan to visit will be that of Modiphius who creates among many RPG, wargame and boardgame lines the Achtung! Cthulhu RPG which is now in its 2nd edition using their inhouse 2D20 ruleset.
Any game with a tagline 'Punch evil in the tentacles' should be worthy of interest from all, but it speaks to me directly as perhaps it understands the many fights I've had with evil across the many RPGs I've played in, or ran.
The item I want to pick up is the new Achtung! Cthulhu 2D20 Starter Set. Starter Sets over the last few years have moved on from that deep box with a map and a wafer-thin book or two, some pre-gens, some tokens and a quick adventure - but mostly empty space (Pathfinder 2E - I'm looking at you). But it seems a lot more effort is being put into Starter Sets. This one gives you:
- Starter rules to quickly launch you into Achtung! Cthulhu’s cinematic world of pulp adventures!
- Among the Wolves, a thrilling 60 page three-act starter mission which takes you from Dunkirk to the heart of an alien hive city!
- Six pre-generated characters so you can play right away.
- Six huge maps and over 100 tokens to run battles and encounters.
- Quick reference sheets to help players master the rules.
- Limited Edition Elder Sign Dice Set with 2d20 and 4 challenge dice.
60 pages of adventure! 60! Enough I would imagine to get a proper feel of the game and not a fleeting intro. I first noticed starter boxes were getting better was with Cubicle 7's Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Starter. There was enough adventure in that box to keep us as a group busy for a long RPGing weekend, and we even were told we missed a few bits out to fit it into 15/16 hours of solid gaming.
This set also includes the pre-gens, which is standard, but useful as those should be mentioned in the adventures and include a good range of skills and actions. Lots of maps and tokens, excellent, plus who can resist another set of dice? They also throw in quick reference sheets which are very useful.
So, this is on my shopping list and if the D-Day: The Darkest Day campaign is there (it would make sense as the 80th D-Day Anniversary is coming) then I shall find some players and run this baby, so they too, can punch evil in the face!
